IAFC Endorses Use of State Fire Training Academies to Deliver ODP Courses
Fairfax, VA., June 10, 2004…Recently, Adam Piskura authored an e-mail, which was widely distributed in the fire service, regarding fire training issues at the federal government level. Mr. Piskura is the director of training, Connecticut Fire Academy, and the current president of the North America Fire Training Directors. The IAFC views the issues expressed in Mr. Piskura’s commentary as having substance and fact.
Mr. Piskura makes the valid point in his message about the value of state fire training systems. Yet, these state training organizations receive no federal support from the Office for Domestic Preparedness (ODP). There is no question that state training organizations can enhance the training available to all fire departments within states. These state training organizations are critical for providing consistent, up to date instruction to volunteer and career fire departments throughout states.
The IAFC believes that ODP should provide funds directly to state fire training directors. The IAFC has written a letter to Sue Mencer, director of ODP, stating our position and will be working with ODP on this matter.
